Dua is an Arabic word and it’s an integral part of Islam one of the most powerful acts of worship in Islam is Dua or prayer. There are many important virtues of Dua in Islam as described below.

Definition of dua in Islam

Dua in Islam is calling upon Allah the Almighty through supplication or request. It is a worship that involves expressing one’s needs, desires and hopes to Allah Almighty with the intention of blessings and forgiveness. Dua is an essential part of the Islamic faith and a powerful means of connecting with Allah. It can be done in any language, at any time and place, and is considered a personal dialogue between the Servant and Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty hears and knows all your words. Allah Almighty knows all your pride, your cries, your sorrows, your secret wishes and dreams. Whatever happens, is predestined in your destiny. but is happening as a reward for your actions. And these can be changed only by prayer. Only dua can change bad luck and only dua can get rid of any evil that may befall you as a result of your actions. Alhamdulillah.

The Concept of Dua in Islam

Almighty Allah says

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ ۖ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لِى وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِى لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ   ( 186 Al-Baqarah )

When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ About Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Way˺.    ( Al-Baqarah 186 )

We are upset about some things without knowing. And in some things we are pleased, Allah knows both. Allah Almighty knows and understands what is best for us.

The words of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

Abu Hurairah narrated that:

The Prophet said: “There is nothing more honorable with Allah [Most High] than supplication.”   (At-Tirmidhi 3370)

Abu Hurairah narrated that:

the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed, he who does not ask Allah, he gets angry with him.”   (At-Tirmidhi 3373)

The role of dua in Islamic faith

Dua is also closely associated with tawakkul or trust in Allah Almighty in Islam. We should pray with trust in Allah’s plan. Through prayer and tawakkul we can deepen our relationship with Allah. And it is better for us to live according to His teachings and values. so that we may find peace in this life and salvation in the Akhirah.

The difference between dua and other forms of prayer


Dua is supplication, which can be described as an intimate conversation with Allah Almighty at any time, day or night, in any language. Asking Allah for something for oneself or for someone else. It can be for happiness, peace, money, wealth, the forgiveness of sins, etc.

It is not mandatory. If you do not make dua, you will not sin. But dua is very important for us dua can change our life.

Prayer (Salah)

The Salah that Allah Exalted has made obligatory on every Muslim must be performed. You must have to pray five times a day. which is only in Arabic. If you do not pray, you will be guilty. Allah Ta’ala has made prayer obligatory for every Muslim, which must be performed.

An important point is. Prayer should be performed according to the rules of prayer. It has to be done slowly and can’t be rushed. You have to think that you are sitting in front of Allah and Allah is watching you.

The Etiquette of Dua in Islam

The proper way to make dua

1. Confirm that your sanctity

2.  Sit like Salah 

3. Face the qiblah

4. Recite some verses from Quran

5. Start by reciting durood upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

6. Raise your hands for making dua

7. Praise Allah and give thanks 

8. Use Allah’s beautiful names to call Him. Allah has 99 names. Al-Rahman, Al-Raheem, Al-Khaliq, Al-Malik, Al-Mannaan

9. Have faith that your dua will be answered by Allah and that Allah is listening to your dua 

10. Cry while making dua

11. Keep speaking your mind to Allah – don’t lose hope. Remember, Allah’s kingdom is vast and never-ending, so don’t limit yourself when asking Him for something.

11. End the dua by thanking Allah

The best times to make dua

1. Last third of the night (which is known as the time of Tahajjud)

2. Make dua in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan ( especially the odd nights )

3. Friday afternoons

4. the ninth day of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah

5. When you are in Sujood 

6. Between the Adhan and Iqama

7. At the end of obligatory prayer

8. When it’s raining

9. While you are travel

10. When breaking your fast 

11. After sending blessings on the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

12. On the day of Arafah

13. When visiting a sick person

You Can make dua anytime but. These specific times are especially blessed and the best times to seek Allah. Many Islamic scholars have described these periods with importance.


Dua is not just a small word. dua is a chance for us. Seek refuge with Allah whether you are a sinner or not. Only by the grace of Allah Almighty can you live happily and peacefully. dua makes us closer to Allah. Dua enriches the door of Allah’s mercy for us. Allah Ta’ala loves the supplicant and bestows His mercy upon him. Every Muslim should make dua to Allah about their problems, wants, advantages and disadvantages. Muslims should always pray for Allah’s help and mercy.
